Mitsubishi’s New Global Small Car to be Built in Thailand, and then China

Osamu Masuko, President of Mitsubishi Motors, confirmed last week that China will join Thailand to have a "Global Small" car production base. Development of the supermini eco-car is expected to complete next year, and production in Mitsubishi’s new plant in Thailand will start in late 2011 or 2012. The Thailand base has a planned annual capacity of 250,000 units.

Smaller than the Colt subcompact, the supermini will get an engine of 1.0-1.3 liter. Some believe it will replace the current Colt or become the new Colt, but that may not be the case in China. A preproduction model of the current Colt has been spotted road testing there in recent months, convincing many that it will soon be mass-produced by Soueast, one of Mitsubishi’s Chinese partners. If this is turre, the new small car, presumed to be built by Soueast too, is unlikely to replace it in any short period after being released.
