Beiqi Foton’s Kenyan Factory Breaks Ground in Nairobi
April 4th, 2011 | Posted in BAIC | exports | FotonIn a ceremony taking place on 4 April in Nairobi, Kenyan Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka and the Chinese ambassador Liu Guangyuan laid the foundation stone for Beiqi Foton’s first vehicle factory in Africa.

Beiqi Foton (Foton Motor), a subsidiary of Beijing Auto (BAIC), claims to be the world’s largest commercial vehicle maker in terms of sales (a claim we find baseless), delivering 684,000 new vehicles last year, including buses, trucks, and MPVs. Earlier this year, it set the ambitious goal of selling 1.5 million units worldwide and increasing sales in overseas markets to half a million in 2015.

The Nairobi factory will install two assembly lines and employ over 500 people, over 90% of which are said to be local. When completed in May 2012, the factory will be able to roll out 10,000 vehicles a year. Most of the products will be sold in East Africa.
