On Friday evening in Shanghai, with the help of Rosie Huntington Whiteley, the star from Transformer 3, Shanghai-GM announced the release of the second generation Chevy Aveo (called Sonic in North America). With two engine options, a 1.4-liter and 1.6-liter, the all-new Aveo, as a three-box sedan or a hatchback, sells for 81,800-111,800 Yuan ($12,576-$17,188).
Built on the Gamma II platform, the new Chevy subcompact has a 2525mm wheelbase, 45mm longer than that of the first generation. The hatchback stands 4039mm long, 1735mm wide, and 1517mm high; the notchback is 360mm longer. MacPherson struts are employed for front suspensions, torsional beam for the rear.
The 1.4L S-TEC III engine, shared with Chevy Sail, is rated 76kw/6000rpm and 131Nm/4200rpm, while the 1.6L ECOTEC DVVT, found also on Cruze, can develop 89kw at 6000rpm and 155Nm at 4000rpm. Both engines are mated to a 5MT or 6AMT.
Standard features on all three trim levels, SL, SE, and SX, include ABS+EBD, dual front airbags, remote key, power windows/doors/external mirrors. The SX models get OnStar telematics, power sunroof, leather seats, and two more airbags.
