Roewe W5, the first SUV under Shanghai Auto’s own brands, went on sale today in five versions of two engine options: a 3.2L and turbo 1.8L. Prices start from 171,800 yuan ($26,730), for a 2WD 1.8T, and top out at 298,800 yuan ($46,500) for a 4WD 3.2L.

Modeled upon the 2008 Ssangyong Kyron, Roewe W5 has a 2740mm wheelbase and is between a typical compact (such as Toyota RAV4) and midsize (such as Toyota Highlander) in size (at 4676mm long, 1888mm wide, 1765mm high). It was originally scheduled to hit the market in 2010, but did not make an official debut until the 2011 Shanghai Auto Show due to development delays and SAIC’s troubles with Ssangyong (the unfortunate alliance of the two companies finally dissolved late last year).

Of the two engines employed, the turbo-charged Kavachi 1.8-liter is SAIC-made and able to put out 118kw of power and 215Nm of torque; the imported 3.2L Tornado XGI can develop 162kW at 6000rpm and 310Nm at 4600rpm. The 1.8T models come as 2WD or 4WD, with a 5MT or Tiptronic 6AT; both of the 3.2 models are of 4WD and get a Tiptronic 5AT.
