With 2012 Eastar, Chery Renews Effort to Gain Recognition in Mid-size Market
May 17th, 2012 | Posted in Chery | New CarsDespite years of endeavor, Chery has mostly failed to gain a foothold in the mid-size sedan segment. None of its three entries there, Chery Eastar, Riich G5 and G6, delivered over 100 units last month (according to China Association of Automobile Manufacturers). The Eastar in particular sold only 224 units so far this year and 1,269 in 2011, ranking at the bottom of the segment.
On Wednesday, the 2012 Chery Eastar hit the market, struggling to win over consumers through offering more space and upgraded styling. Yet, despite a 68mm increase in wheelbase and a new interior clearly imitating that of an Audi, the model remains bland and forgettable.
The two engine options, ACTECO 1.8 and 2.0 DVVT, are familiar choices for Chery, so are the 5MT and CVT. The only 1.8 version, with a 5MT, sells for 95,800 Yuan (15,144 US dollars), the five 2.0 versions for 103,800 Yuan – 135,800 Yuan.
