Dongfeng Partners with Getrag to Produce DCTsOctober 23rd, 2012 | Posted in Dongfeng
Dongfeng Motor (DFM) and Getrag International GmbH signed an agreement on Monday to jointly develop, manufacture, and sell dual-clutch transmissions (DCTs). The new company, Dongfeng-Getrag Transmission Co., Ltd., will be owned equally by the two sides and based in Wuhan, home to Dongfeng.
With an investment of 120 million Euros, the joint venture will create in three years an annual production capacity of 250,000 low-torque 6-speed DCTs, which is expected to rise gradually to half a million. Its first product, to go on sale towards the end of 2015, will have a torque range of 150-190Nm.
The low-torque DCTs will be equipped on future Dongfeng cars, including some Citroen and Peugeot models built by Dongfeng-PSA (DPCA). The joint venture also has a plan to sell them to other automakers in or outside China.
Getrag has more than one Chinese partner. Getrag (Jiangxi) Transmission Co., Ltd is a joint venture it set up with JMC in January 2007. With factories in Nanchang, Gangzhou, and Yudu, it had a production capacity of 1 million gearboxes in 2011. By focusing on low-torque DCTs, Dongfeng-Getrag has chosen a product line that will not make it a direct rival to the Jiangxi venture.
