The production version of the Sail EV concept was exposed this week bearing a new nameplate "Springo." An all-electric version of the Chevy Sail hatchback, the Springo EV is expected to go on sale later this month when the 2012 Guangzhou Auto Show will be held.
The logo of the Springo EV, containing an S letter, has been seen before on the Sail EV concept unveiled two years ago at the 2010 Guangzhou Auto Show (read our report on it). It is possible that "Springo" will be declared Shanghai-GM’s China-only sub-brand, in the same category as "Venucia" from Dongfeng-Nissan, ‘Everus" from GAC-Honda, "Ciimo" from Dongfeng-Honda, and "Shouwang" from Beijing-Hyundai. If so, the upcoming Springo lineup will include non-electric, low-cost models.
Details of the pure electric are to be revealed at the Guangzhou auto show which is to open on November 22. Based on what we know about the electric Chevy Sail, the Springo EV is to get lithium iron batteries of 22kwh supplied by GM and an electric motor that can put out a maximum of 85kW of power. It can run as fast as 130km/h and about 150km on one charge.
