On Thursday, the joint venture of Fujian Benz held a ceremony in Fuzhou to mark the opening of its R&D center, where a group of invited journalists had a guided tour.
Costing half a billion Yuan, the R&D center comprises a design office, whole vehicle and parts testing labs, a proving ground, and a workshop for trial production. These facilities are located in two different areas in Fuzhou, the capital city of Fujian. The center’s primary task is to conduct comprehensive testing on vehicles and parts rather than developing new models. Cars tested here include not only the MPVs and vans from Fujian Benz but sedans like C200 and C300 built by Beijing Benz.
Founded in 2007 as Fujian Daimler, the 50:50 joint venture between Fujian Motor and Daimler Light Vehicle (Hong Kong) was re-named as Fujian Benz on March 1, 2012. Last year, it sold about 7,500 units of the locally built Viano, Vito, and Sprinter.
