Changhe Ideal is a mini car built by Changhe Auto, a branch of BAIC (Beijing Auto). It is essentially a re-styled Suzuki Wagon R, which has been produced under the nameplate "Beidouxing" by Changhe in partnership with Suzuki. Both cars have a 2335mm wheelbase. In developing the Ideal, Changhe teamed up with Italy’s Bertone.
The first Ideal was released in 2003. Due to poor craftsmanship and high pricing, the 2003 model received overwhelmingly negatively reviews. Changhe halted the production in 2004 to address problems in vehicle design, manufacturing, and pricing. The upgraded model went on sale in late 2004 with a starting price of 48,800 Yuan. From 2003-2005, the Ideal was powered by a 1.0L or 1.1L engine.
In May 2006, the second-gen hit the market, called Ideal II, priced from 42,800 Yuan. To the 1.0L/1.lL engine options a new 58kW 1.3 liter was added. The overall length of the car was extended from 3560mm to 3600mm, while the wheelbase remained unchanged at 2335mm. With the released the refreshed version, Ideal A+, in June 2011, the starting price was further lowered 34,900 Yuan.
Sales of the Ideal reached 3,470 in 2012 and 1,902 in 2013. In 2014, only 304 units were sold.
