The QQ supermini, for years the best-selling Chery model, was born in 2003 as a clone of Daewoo Matiz. In 2005 GM sued Chery in Beijing for intellectual property infringement, but later reached a reconciliation with the Chinese automaker on non-disclosed terms. GM in partnership with SAIC (Shanghai Auto) and Wuling Motor has manufactured and marketed the Matiz in China as Chevrolet Spark (between 2004 and 2010) and Baojun Lechi (since 2010).
The QQ has given rise to several variants. In September 2006, Chery launched a mini notchback, the QQ6, which had a body stretched to 4 meters and employed a 50kW 1.1L and 61kW 1.3L engines. The two-box, hatchback version had been re-named QQ3. In 2010 the QQ6 was re-badged to be Cowin 1.
On June 26, 2009, the QQme, codenamed S16, hit the market. Designed by the Italian Enrico Fumia, the re-styled QQ sat on a shorter wheelbase of 2315mm. All-electric version, called QQ EV (or QQ3 EV), was introduced in 2012. Storing energy in a 150Ah Lead-acid battery pack (60V 6kW), it has a top speed of 80km/h and driving range of 100-150km. Under the Riich marque, Chery launched in 2009 the QQ-derived M1 and its sports version the X1. Sharing a 2330mm wheelbase, Riich M1 is powered by a 51kW 1.0 liter, and the X1 by 1 62kW 1.3 liter or 80kW 1.5 liter.
On March 1, 2013, a face-lifed QQ hit the market with a slightly larger body size. While getting major changes in styling, few upgrades are made to the running gear.
The QQ has been assembled in Burma since 2010, where it is marketed as "Burma Mini." In Indonesia, Indomobil began rolling out the supermini in September 2006.
Cumulative sales of the QQ topped 500,000 in November 2008 and 1 million in the March 2013. The popularity of QQ waned in the last few years; in 2014, 60,579 units were sold.
